Do you ever feel like an impostor in the health and wellness field? Do you ever feel like you’re not qualified enough to be providing advice and tips to those who come to you for help? If so, you are far from alone.

Imposter syndrome is something that affects many health and wellness professionals, and it can be a real source of stress and frustration. And it's not just for those in the health & wellness space...

  • 1 in 4 physicians frequently or intensely experience imposter syndrome symptoms, according to a study from Stanford.
  • According to a KPMG study, 75% of executive women experience imposter syndrome.
  • It's estimated that 70% of people will experience at least one episode of imposter syndrome during their lifetime!

I can remember feeling guilty as a new Nutritionist if I was at the pub enjoying steak and chips and a glass of wine, or worrying that a client might see me at the movies with a ginormous-sized popcorn. Wouldn't being seen eating anything but the Mediterranean Diet mean I was a fraud?

No, of course not! And I bet whatever you are worrying about - that you don't know enough or aren't expert enough - is just as silly as me hiding out in the dark corners of the movie theatre waiting to be caught out by the food police.

The truth is, you CAN learn to overcome imposter syndrome and become more confident in your abilities. Here are some tips for overcoming imposter syndrome as a health and wellness practitioner:

1. Acknowledge your feelings.

The first step to overcoming imposter syndrome is to accept and acknowledge your feelings. It’s ok to feel like an impostor—it’s not a sign of weakness or lack of ability. Give yourself the space to process your feelings and accept them without judgement. The more confident you become working with clients, the less you will feel like a fraud as you begin to see that you are worthy of your title.

2. Practice self-care.

Self-care is essential for managing imposter syndrome. Taking care of yourself can help reduce stress and improve your self-esteem, which can help you feel more confident and capable. Spend time doing things that make you feel good, like exercising, meditating, or spending time outdoors. Or, if all else fails, just eat a ginormous tub of popcorn and binge-watch your favourite show (kidding!)

3. Set realistic goals.

It can be easy to get overwhelmed when you’re feeling like an impostor. To prevent this, set realistic goals for yourself and break them down into smaller, manageable chunks. This will help you stay focused and motivated, and it will help you feel more in control.

4. Connect with a mentor.

Surrounding yourself with people who are experienced and knowledgeable in the health and wellness field can give you the support and guidance you need to overcome imposter syndrome. Connecting with a mentor or coach can help you get feedback on your work and build your confidence. For example, a mentor may help you develop a plan to address any areas of self-doubt or fear, and celebrate the successes you achieve along the way.

5. Celebrate your successes.

Whenever you accomplish something, no matter how small, take the time to celebrate it. Acknowledge and appreciate your successes, big and small, and remind yourself of all the things you’re capable of. Doing so will give you the confidence to continue striving for even greater accomplishments and help provide evidence to your mind that you are not a fraud!

Imposter syndrome can be a real challenge to overcome, but with the right strategies, it is possible.

With a bit of dedication and effort, you can overcome imposter syndrome and become a more confident and capable health and wellness practitioner. And don't forget to take a break and treat yourself to a movie and popcorn feast once in a while! It's an essential part of the journey to overcoming imposter syndrome!
